As some of you know, my landlord has recently moved to evict me due to my companion dog – which is illegal and considered a form of discrimination according to the Fair Housing Act. Here is an update on the situation – including a new round of threats from the apartment complex. As of Saturday I have yet to receive a retraction from the landlord of the eviction notice, but in a letter postmarked Friday he sent another threatening letter to me stating broke down cardboard boxes I put in the windows to keep my apartment warm in the winter due to the windows being extremely drafty are in violation of my lease and I have seven days to remove them.
I’m going to comply with the request, and send a letter stating such via certified mail, which is also going to contain a maintenance request to have my windows properly weatherized, a weather strip placed on the bottom of my door (I can see right through the bottom crack) and other miscellaneous issues that need to be fixed. I am also going to state that if they do not fix them by March 1 (the next rental period – that rent will be placed in escrow)
Coincidence Or Harrasment/Discrimination?
I have had cardboard boxes in my window since November of last year and have just now received a letter that was sent the day after the apartment complex manager was receiving calls from advocates and local media regarding his threat to evict me because of my companion dog – which according to the fair housing act is a form of discrimination. Is it just coincidence that he choose to complain about it now – or is he nitpicking every little thing he can in an attempt to evict me.
Concord Place Apartments, in Kalalamazoo MI (operated by Edward Rose and Sons) since the original eviction notice has requested me fill out a leasing application for a criminal background check, sent a letter regarding another leasing violation – which has been visible since November of last year and has been caught lying about how long they have been requesting paperwork about my companion dog.
To me this seems a clear cut pattern of harassment and or discrimination, don’t you agree? If so – what should I do? I can’t afford a lawyer to defend myself from a large company such as Edward Rose.
