Sweet Autistic Surfer!!

Clay Marzo is a great surfer with Aspergers Syndrome a form of Autism.  There is now a movie about Clay’s experience surfing and the struggles he has with Aspergers Syndrome and his career choice, a touring surfer.  There is one great line in this movie that I really love, and it made me realize some things.Clay is very clearly an excellent surfer, and I’m not really into surfing myself.  The line I really thought was very provoking during this teaser is by Dr. Tony Atwood – a world renowned expert and Aspergers Syndrome.  He states, “You don’t suffer from Aspergers Syndrome, you suffer from other people.”

Marzo apparently surfs in quite a unique style according to an article buy USA Today.  He tends to showboat and act more like a skateboarder when riding the waves.  His unique surfing style has impacted surfing so much, that judges are now having to change the structure of judging surfing events to include creative expression and innovation.  Many of the surfing moves clay makes which marvel his surfing peers have no name.  Nine time world surfing champion Kelly Slater states, “He knows things I don’t know. He knows things that all the guys I’m surfing with don’t know.”

You can now purchase “Just Add Water” here. This is a great film that shows Aspergers Syndrome in a positive view, and shows how people with Aspergers can struggle yet succeed.
