Social Security is meant to help people survive if they have a disability that they were born with, and with most people they are meant to survive a lifetime off this money. For some people there will never be a way out of Social Security’s grasp – and its a grasp that you can barley survive in. In Michigan you get $670 a month – that’s it, you don’t have enough money to pay for rent, utilities and transportation with that money. No wonder people that get on disability always look so down and out, because they are not surviving – their just alive.
People often wonder why the disabled look so down and out, why they appear unable to get out the rut they are in. People wonder why so many are unable to pay there bills on disability when they have free money coming in. Well free money is more like free pennies.
In my town you get the cheapest appartments at $450 a month, then on top of that you have $50/month for electricity (a bit high but it will be there soon). It is currently $50 a month for a month long public transit pass here, lets say $40 for housekeeping/laundry. That gives you less then a hundred dollars and you still have not payed for things like renters insurance, and emergencies that come along.
Now people wonder why so many people on disability just wander the streets homeless, its most likely because they can only wonder the streets homeless to live. You can’t afford standard living on SSI – its just mathematically impossible. People on Social Security are getting $250 bulk payment from the government bailout – I’m willing to bet almost every one of them is going to use them to pay off some sort of medial or emergency debt they incurred.
So when you think its hard to live on your unemployment checks which are more then what those on disability make a month – remember those who can’t even afford to live.
Perhaps this was just a stupid rant, or is it?

Not a stupid rant.
Nope. Not stupid.
What is really annoying is that many of them could, if trained and given reasonable accommodation, work for themselves; but they’re not getting that. And if they could work, then the rest who couldn’t would have enough to go around.
