Rick Tallman: Autism Troll

by admin on July 13, 2010

in Advocacy

So it seems that there is a new fad on Autism support email lists and websites…. trolling.  I don’t know why so many people do it, but some people just seem to love to troll these sites.  The latest troll on Autism Support resources is a guy named Rick Tallman who goes by the self given title “Mr. Wonderful.”

I don’t know why so many people just love to troll support websites maybe its because they are lonely, maybe its because they are angry, maybe its because they just want attention but frankly its getting really annoying.

Update: According to one of our readers Rick Tallman is the leader of an advocacy group that advocates for use of restraints in schools.

Discussion Point: How do you deal with trolls?

I have a… history… with Mr. Tallman. His trolling is nothing new. You may know him better as the head admin of the RestraintInfo list.

If you actually bothered to check the link you supplied for “Rick Tallman”, you would have learned that Rick had a child killed due to restraints so your conclusion that he advocates FOR restrains is fractually WRONG!

I was just getting ready to post the same thing Chuck did. The Yahoo group is fighting to stop restraint & seclusion & the members are mostly parents of autistic children who have been abused or even killed. Rick’s son was killed by restraints….

Chuck and Anna are correct. Despite his trolling (e.g. he participated in a character attack on me lead by John Best), Mr. Tallman is very much on the right side of the restraint debate. As a point of fact, his list has historically been one of the better sources of information on the various eggregious abuses of restraint that regularly occur in the educational system.

I did not attack your character, I disagreed with your viewpoint. There is a difference.

*Cough* Please pay attention to what I actually wrote.

BTW, Until you used the term with your own meaning, I thought trolling meant dragging a fishing line slowly through the water so some dumb fish would think it was a meal.

Why are you happy someone is trolling?

am glad you’ve acknowledged that yr characterization of rick’s stance on restraints is desperately wrong. in my experience in primeval TN, kids w/autism are disproportionately subjected to abusive physical restraint & seclusion. i am indebted to mr. wonderful for his passionate work on the topic.

@Holly Lu I saw your post & you mentioned primevil TN. I created a video:

“America’s Forgotten Children” Restraint & Seclusion Awareness
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyTfOnPLnSM

The child in the video “Jeremiah” is from TN. Jeremiah’s mother stood up & fought and has made some changes for autistic children in TN. They still have a long way to go just like the rest of the world but if you need assistance, someone to help advocate to ban restraint & seclusion in your state let me know. Everyone needs to remember our children need protection! That’s where everyones attention should be right now. We all need to be calling our Senators & asking them to co-sponsor Federal Bill S2860 WITHOUT the use of restraint/seclusion as a planned intervention in a student’s IEP.

15 TROLL NUMBER TWO July 22, 2010 at 5:08 pm

RICK TALLMAN SUPPORTED RESTRAINING AUTISTIC CHILDREN BECAUSE HE WAS TOO STUPID TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THE BILL SAID.

HEY YOU GUYS,
I hope you realize that “TROLL NUMBER TWO” is none other that Mr John Best, aka bettwice33.
He took the definition section of HR 4247 and quoted “(1) CHEMICAL RESTRAINT- The term `chemical restraint’ means a drug or medication used on a student to control behavior or restrict freedom of movement that is not–

(A) prescribed by a licensed physician for the standard treatment of a student’s medical or psychiatric condition; and

(B) administered as prescribed by the licensed physician.”
as meaning that the bill SUPPORTED chemical restraints.
He simply isn’t bright enough to know the difference between “definations” and “allowing”. If Best had bothered to read beyond the definations he would have seen that the bill DID NOT support the idea of chemical, physical or mechanical restraints.

What information do you have to support its John Best?

18 Rick July 24, 2010 at 4:41 pm

Because it is almost a direct quote from what he posted on various lists when HR 4247 was announced.
The shouting and the use of the word STUPID should be a dead give away.
As you know, anyone who doesn’t agree with Best is STUPID.

Ricky is a sweetheart and everybody should be proud to have him “trolling” their websites. FBHD.

As I don’t know him in real life, I can’t comment on the “sweetheart” bit. I will freely admit that his heart is in the right place on the issue of restraint and (the most common types of) abuse; regrettably, however, he is (willfully or otherwise) nearly completely ignorant of disability etiquette, verbose in his commentary on issues he’s markedly ignorant about, and perfectly willing to ignore standards of netiquette when doing so suits his purposes.

I have come to know Rick on a personal basis and he has done some very kind favors for my daughter. We don’t agree on many things but we are both father’s of autistic children who depend on us to give them the best quality of life that we can provide for them. I know that Rick loves his son very deeply and cares deeply about families with autistic children. I don’t believe that anybody who is not a parent can possibly understand how it feels to be the parent of a severely affected autistic child….P.S. I am glad that you lised all of Rick’s good qualities toward the end of your post. FBHD.
