I was having a conversation yesterday on pre-natal testing for Autism. This is a very touchy subject, but I feel as I have a child on the way my feelings need to be said.
The Test
As of currently the only part of the autism spectrum that can be tested for is Touretts Syndrome, although Autism Speaks and several other organizations are throwing massive amounts of money into a prenatal test for Autism.
My Thoughts
I have nothing against pre-natal testing, I do however have issues with what people would do because of the testing. I believe abortion is wrong, in any circumstance (unless the mother would die without one). A child is a child, from the day the sperm knocks on the eggs door. I also really hate people who think abortion is an act of compassion.
I think prenatal testing of children is a good thing, as many abnormalities are going to need prompt care right after birth. I would most likely support testing of my child, however I would ask that the doctor not share the results with me or Kate, and only use the results to make sure that the child gets the prompt care it needs.

If you don’t believe in abortion, don’t have one! But it’s none of your business if my family decides one severely autistic child is enough.

Oops, sorry about the last post. I’m not sure that prenatal testing is nessecery, the problems that arise with AS are usually a little later. I could see early testing after the child is born to help with development. With the family history early testing, if available, could be of tremendous help to families raising spectrum children.
