I recently found a news item where parents were giving their nine year old son medical marijuana to help him cope with Autism. According to the parents the marijuana is helping him cope. The parents give their son the medical marijuana through marijuana tea and marijuana oil based cookies. According to the story the child comes home from school every day wanting his “tea and cookies” because of gut pain caused by anxiety. His parents claim they did not tell him what the stuff they were giving him was.
Before trying Medical Marijuana Jay, the nine year old son would eat non food items. He has been known to eat his own shirt, as well as blankets. Apparently now he has stopped eating non food items according to his parents. In school Jay is taking part in ABA. Before marijuana he would have 30-50 aggressions a day at another student or teacher. Now he has reached days where there are none.

THAT is an amazing story!
may i ask what makes it amazing?
Sure. It took away his anxiety! My father drank whiskey, I take anti-depressants–anxiety can be debilitating. Pot just made me stupid, but to each his own!
To me, the question isn’t why are people giving their kid pot, but…why does pot help this kid? We profess to know so much about the mind, but we know little or nothing. Curiosity just got the best of me.
Do you see? Rather than judging, lets look at the facts (hopefully they are facts and not BS) critically and ask questions! Would we rather give a kid a legal drug that causes tardive dyskenesia and turn him into a zombie, or make him a giggle box who eats too much? Hmmmm…not hard for me to decide if it was my kid, regardless of what the psych’s say.
Pot, by personal experience, is not a mind altering drug that makes you go crazy and go out and kill people…it’s more a recreational drug like beer that makes you a stupid couch potato, who sleeps a lot and drives way too slow. (Nobody should smoke/drink and drive, though. That IS going out and killing people in a really sad way.)
I guess I was just amazed at the degree of calm it gave to their son. If that had been a pharmaceutical study…Eli Lilly & Co. would be hanging from the rafters with dollar signs in their eyes.
But what do I know…I’m just a bartenders kid.
If you consume large amounts of cannabis, yes, it can make you stupid! But you are comparing recreational use to medical use, and that just isn’t the same animal. I know other autistics who use cannabis to control their symptoms, and it really does work, and it certainly has NOT made them stupid! Far from being “giggle boxes”, one is finally able to hold a job, and the other is able to stay in the classroom.
I wish I’d had pot when I was in school. I wouldn’t have had to drop out because they couldn’t understand why I suddenly had to leave the room 4-5 times over the course of a 3 hour class. It really is a miracle medicine.
And given new research showing it’s anticancer effects, hopefully it’ll get more attention for it’s medical uses.
Mothers in Jamaica will give a child a small amount of tincture of cannabis if that child is having trouble paying attention or sitting still in the classroom. (Sound familiar?)
And it works.
I hope so very much that no one takes this away from this child.
This does not surprise me. There are two types of Marijuana used in Medical Marijuana Distribution. One Helps with Pain and Nausea such as in the case of chronic illnesses like Cancer or AIDs. The other Helps with Anxiety and over stimulation. If properly administered in correct dosing, it has been shown to help People with GAD and Social Anxiety. Extending this to Autistic Overwhelm is a pretty obvious step to me.
I’m glad that it has helped this boy- and really does point out that a lot of the behaviors that NTs have issues with are often anxiety related.
We have known for YEARS that marijana helps certian medical conditions with less side effects than most drugs. WHEN ARE WE GOING TO BAND TOGETHER AND MAKE IT LEGAL!!!!! Who knows how many lives can be changed for the better. And what is the worst that could happen?
