Carnegie Mellon is going to be holding a Symposium on Autism in October.  Its free.  Its Carnegie Mellon (a big name in science).  It looks like its Quackery Free (which is rare for Autism Symposiums).  I wish I could attend, but I’m not close enough.

Gary McKinnon is a hacker from Britain who is set to be extradited the United States.  McKinnon Allegedly hacked into the Pentagon’s computer system disabling and/or interrupting several national security systems while looking for info on UFO’s.  McKinnon’s defense is that the reason he hacked the United States Military was “as a direct result of following the obsessional interest which drives him.”  It upsets me this individual is using Aspergers as an excuse for his illegal actions. I received a very threatening and disturbing comment a few days ago on a blog post, these comments I normally delete as they serve no purpose.  But this comment does serve a purpose and there is a legitimate gripe.  This person appears to be the sister of an Autistic girl who can’t communicate with the rest of the world, and she seems very upset with how I disagree with Autism Speaks. A 50 year old being diagnosed with Autism is probobly not news to a lot of people in the Autism movement, but it does show that there are many people who have slipped through the diagnosis process who may need supports or even an explanation that can cause them to live much happier lives. A new movie entitled ‘Just Add Water’ was featured recently at a showing in Hawaii.  It featured the story of Clay Marzo a professional surfer who is also Autistic.  The movie follows around Clay during his surfing tours and shows how his struggles how he struggles with Aspergers.   EDIT: I added a trailer and info on how to buy the movie. There is an ongoing court case in which a British teenager recently diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome hacked into United States Military Computers and allegedly disabled several national security measures.  In his fight for extradition it seems as though the fact he has Aspergers Syndrome was used as an attempt to lessen his consequences.
