The online Autism Support Network has been infiltrated with battles and upset Autistic people who are upset about how an online chat is moderated. A user of the Autism Support Network recently complained about how moderators in the online chat are not allowing Autistic people to openly communicate about their struggles with autism. They finished their letter with:
I am appealing to those who are not capable of this job (You know who you are) to at least be big enough and stand down or for those who are not Moderators, Leave. You are ruining this site for the people who need it. You are here because you know someone or are immediately effected by autism in your life. Think of it from their side. We need a place where we can come to feel we are welcome. The welcome mat in ASN chat has been ripped from the floor and thrown away. Please see this as not a ‘getting at you’ type of message, but as a plea to give the site back to those who need it, Autistic people.
Another user comments on the Operators in the channel
They are mostly well meaning Neurotypical people who really do think this site is for their own personal problems and difficulties, and they incorrectly translate Autistic reactions, behavior and perceptions according to their own , they don’t have the understanding of Autism because they are not Autistic, nor do they have the training to qualify as objective Moderators. That’s not meant to be a criticism of these people but they can only relate to people according to their own experience and their experience is different. The problems they can relate to are their own…depression, fear, anxiety and how they experience it, They are not equipped to deal with Autism.
I have noticed that this is a common thing in Autism Support organizations, even Autism Speaks suffors from this. How should Autism Support organizations be more supportive of those with autism.
