So right now I am having to search for a new apartment and finding an apartment on SSI is actually quite a difficult task. In Michigan if you are on SSI you make $674 a month. On top of good references most apartments want you to make triple the cost of rent to pay for an apartment. The lowest end apartment I could find in Kalamazoo that has a place available was $450, but they wanted me to make triple the income and have a cosigner. So what is someone on SSI to do to find an apartment?
Subsidized Housing
Yes, subsidized housing is an option but there is still a huge wait to get an apartment. Right now the word is that it is a 3 year wait for subsidized housing. So what options are there to find housing when your on SSI if you can not find a co-signer? What options are available?

I too am on SSI and although I am grateful for it, it doesn’t help if I need to find a place to live. All I can do is chip out at a relative’s house and I can barely do that.
I believe the answer that no one wants to openly give is this: You’re screwed.
I’ve been fighting the same issue here in Florida for weeks. The few places I’ve found that don’t require income 2.5-3.5 times the rent, are simply too high for SSI if you actually want to eat and have electricity as well. To say nothing of owning a car.
The problem isn’t SSI though, it’s the stupid cost of living. I’d take a shed in the woods if I could, but that’s just not an option.

Did you happen to find one? I currently am on S.S.I. too and I live in Manhattan and am staying with family. I am looking to get out on my own for once, but I attend college here and want to stay within the 5 boroughs cause I get use of access-a-ride. Nothing is even close to the crappy amount of money I get.
