11 Year Old Aspie Firefighter

An 11 year old Aspie has built his own working firetruck, complete with on board computer, 10 gallon water tank with hoses, siren, first aid kits, and official firefighting decals from his local fire department.

In the article in the Durham Region News 11 year old Sammy Xerri went to open houses at the local fire department and would talk about his truck to firefighters – Who did not believe him.  So he brought it in and now Sammy is well known at the local department and even responds to local neighborhood calls.

Although his firetruck is on a Fisher Price frame its a complete working firetruck.  Sammy does not even stop with building fire trucks either – hes been attending the local junior firefighter academy where he has received several awards based on his knowledge.

I think its great that the Durham Region News has separated itself from other media outlets and actually gave a positive story about those with Autism, and I hope Sammy does not let Aspergers get in the way of pursuing his goal of becoming a firefighter.

Wow. This is really awesome and I hope that neither Asperger’s or his being underage does not interfere with his ability to pursue his dreams.
