Disability, Insurance and Debt

Common factor for disabled people in America is a large debt, poor or no health insurance, and if you ask me these factors have to be improved. The amount you earn in Michigan on SSI is $667 – the lowest you can pay for rent in our area is about $500.  That leaves $167 for the rest of your monthly needs such as transportation, electric, gas, – which means most people on disability will go in debt – its a factor of life.

Another thing is lack of health insurance – and even poor health insurance on SSI.  In my area there is only one dental clinic you can go to, and its extremely difficult to get an appointment – even in an emergency.  I had a tooth that fractured, and I ended up wanting to yank it out myself.

It really upsets me when politicians start talking about Universal Healthcare when they can not handle the insurance they already provide to those with disabilities.  If society was on the same insurance I am, there would be a lot of upset people.  Apparently however upset disabled people don’t really matter.
