Disability and Relationships

in Aspergers Living

There is a great movie coming out about Monica and David, two people with developmental disabilities that get married.  The story is a true story and talks about how people with Disabilities should be treated normally and be allowed to live as independently as possible.  The trailer below looks great.

The mother of the bride has a great line in the trailer which I think parents of all children with disabilities should hear.

“People with Developmental Disabilities have needs and desires, they are very much like every one else … As parents because we want to protect them so much we are usually the first ones that treat them unfairly by subconsciously denying them the rights to live a normal life”

This is something I come across alot in my line of work.I walk a very thin line, because though I personally support the right of all to be loved and to fall in love and marry if they choose, where I work ties my hands as far as how much I can openly support that. Drives me out of my mind!!

I guess that is what the alias is for, though I hate having to do that. I do plan on and have the pemission to develop a series of presentations on the topic of people with disabilities and relationships. In order to change something, I do feel the first and most important step is to work on the perceptions of people on those with disabilities and what they are and are not capeable of.

And I do indeed combat those perceptions daily.
