Depression: Its Serious

So lets talk about one thing that often affects people on the Autism Spectrum tonight – depression.  Its a very serious thing and should never be taken lightly.  Before I talk about depression I want to say that it affects people in all walks of life, even those who are doing quite well for themselves and providing for their families.  I’m going to talk about two people that lost their lives to depression that actually had a very rewarding life.  My intention here is to show that it does not just affect people who are having a streak of bad luck.

Johnathan Brandis

Johnathan Brandis was best known for playing Lucas (I’m not going to try and spell his last name) on the cheezy sci-fi show in the 90′s called SeaQuest.  He was a very good actor, however his role was much looked upon like Wil Wheaton’s Wesley Crusher role in Star Trek.  I’ll admit I never really liked the character he portrayed (or Wil Wheaton’s for that matter) but I thought he was a really skilled and great actor (Hell you have to be to start acting in your teenage years on a leading hit show!)  After SeaQuest went off the air and he could not get a decent acting job for a while Brandis began to get depressed and lost his life to depression.

This guy had a lot going for him, he was a great actor and a chick magnet.  He still has a huge fanbase to this day (you can just search him on YouTube to see it.) but he lost his life to depression.

Heres a video of Lucas acting in SeaQuest:

Matt Hughes

While Meteorologist and tornado chaser Matt Hughes is much less famous then Brandis he still had a good life and a lot going for him.  He was featured on the Discovery Channel series Storm Chasers quite frequently and was well known in the storm chasing community according to Storm Track a well respect forum in the Storm Chasing community.  I’m not sure exactly all the he accomplished as I’m rather new to the community but I know he will be missed.  A few months ago Matt Hughes passed away from depression.  Below is a video featuring Meteorologist Matt Hughes that I found on youtube so you can see some of his accomplishments.

My point in profiling these two people is to show that depression effects everyone not just those that have visible problems or reasons to feel down.  People with friends that have depression need to stand up and help their friends.  People with depression also need not feel alone, because they are not.  Some of the greatest people in the world also suffer though depression!
