Work Is Not Good

Author: AspieWeb Admin - Categories: Aspergers, Autism and Society - Tags: , , , ,

So for the last 3 weeks or so I have tried working at a pharmaceutical manufacturer in my area.  Aspergers has not been kind to me - I’m scared to show up now, to anxious to sleep because I have had already a meltdown on the floor which involved me crying, and I feel so out of place.

My co-workers and Line Coordinator are very supportive - and yes the know I’m autistic.  My boss knows as well, but its getting to the point of where I can’t get my work done.  I can’t sleep because I’m so worried that I will mess up the next night - and I have been a complete mess.

On top of that I have had someone tamper with my car on a regular basis, to the point where it was not functional which caused me to be late to work.  I’m supposed to be in work right now, but I called in because I’m so freaking stressed out.

Media & Autism Portrayal

I was reading an article on a hacker who got off without being convicted for infecting a million computers and causing millions of dollors in damage.  The Article was named Autistic Hacker Escapes Penalty. This really bugs me as the reason the hacker got off had nothing to do with him having Aspergers Syndrome.  It makes me wonder if there giving the Autistic Community a black eye in order to further sensationalize there story. Aspergers, Autism and College - A New Source of Help

Author: AspieWeb Admin - Categories: Aspergers, Autism and Society - Tags: , , , , ,

I found a great article in the Arizona Republic on a new programstarting up at The University of Arizona - Chapel Hill that is aimed to help Autistic People with the overwhelming situation of leaving home and going to college.

Chapel Haven West, a two-year residential program for young adults with autism-spectrum disorders, launched June 30 in partnership with the University of Arizona.

The 16 students in the program will be integrated on the campus in a number of ways, but the biggest connection is with the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences.

Betty McDonald, a speech pathologist and an associate professor at UA, will supervise UA graduate students as they work with Chapel Haven students on social-communication skills.

This program seems interesting to me, because it seems to have the goal of readying Autistic People for post-secondary education (which is needed in order to be self-sufficient in our culture.)  The college atmosphere would be most likely overwhelming for someone without Autism - so if you add  the Autism college is a big change, and an overwhelming atmosphere.

What is the rest of the Autistic Communities thoughts on this program?

I was chatting with a ‘friend’ - or someone that I thought was one about some of my issues with Autism Speaks a while back and she made some horrific comments on IM.  This has been on my personal blog for quite some time now.  After kinda wrestling with it I want to post it here.  Read more to see the IM log.
