Reviewing My First AFC

I was placed at Beacon Specialized Living Services Lantern Bay Facility.  On numerous occasions I was threatened, assaulted, and harassed by Beacon’s staff members.  The following is a review of my experience.

On one occasion when I was trying to open a gate, a staff member assaulted me throwing me face first into a snowbank and holding me there for about 10 minutes.  He then proceeded to slap me on the arms when I informed I would be calling the police to report the assault.  I did call the police and they never showed up.  This same individual also tried to provoke me into attacking him saying things like “Lets go bitch”  and “Lets take it outside”.  During this time at least three other staff members witnessed this and did nothing.

The facilities site manager on two occasions threatened me if I reported things to the police.  The first time he said he would lie to the police and say I assaulted them first, and the police would just believe what he said.

On the second occassion he said he would push to have my stay extended for two years and get a court order to force me to stay at beacon if I complained to the police or the mental health system.

I have to say the mental health system, the police and the Michigan department of human services are investigating Beacon Specialized Living Services.  I urge people planning on placing loved ones in a Beacon Facility not to do so and seek alternate placements as the staff are extremely abusive.

“On numerous occasions I was threatened, assaulted, and harassed by Beacon’s staff members.”

That’s horrible!

Did they start the investigation because they listened to you speak up? Well done!

I can Agree with that 100% I lived there from 2007 to 2008 and was assaulted numerous times and witnessed things I will never forget such as people hanging themselves and cutting themselves and staff doing nothing, I swear death or prison would seem better than this place. there was a client that stabbed a staff member becuase he wanted to go to to prison rather than live there. I have a damaged hand from excessive use of force (broken fingers), damage to my metal rods in my left wrist, Damage to my right eye, scars from staff members nails, I have hit with closed fist from the staff members there, They would try to antagonize clients to try to start fights so that they could basically beat up the clients. They to this date have not paid for any of the clients bills related to an accident that was a result of their driver and their driver was at fault, 9 clients including me were injured in the September 26th 2007 accident, ALL of our bills from that witch Medicaid says that the driver at fault is responsible for (BEACON), have not been paid to this date (April 19th 2011) No counseling was given or paid for, 1 client died from injuries from the crash (my roommate David Philips) they tried to cover it up after I said my room stank and my roomate was non responsive and even expected me to sleep in the room that same night I was terrified and had a stroke less than a week later and I am only 25 years old today (march 27th). I have also called the Police to report Assault and tried Network 180 CMH reports and nothing but did get told that If I called 911 again that I would go to Jail because staff just don’t assault clients THAT IS A LIE. If anyone hears the name Beacon Specialized Living Services Run like hell in the other direction!!! By the way I was in the Bangor Lantern Bay site at 28836 63rd st. Bangor MI 49013.
I sympathize with all the other survivors out there, and think that all the survivors out there should band together and sue them.
