Autistic Ari Ne’man’s appointment to the National Council on Disability has been placed on hold anonymously in the Senate according to news resources.

Ari-Ne'eman

Ari Ne’man is the founding president of ASAN or the Autism Self Advocacy Network and has done large amounts of advocating on the Federal level.  Recently President Obama announced he would be seeking to appoint Ne’man to the National Council on Disability.  Ari is however not liked by many of those with money in the Autism federal lobbying arena.  Autism Speaks is one of these lobbying organization.

The White House in a statement still supports Ne’Man’s appointment along with Autism Society of America, Easter Seals, Special Olympics and the American Association of People with Disabilities.

Please contact your senators and represenitives to support Ne’Man’s quick appoitment

i am not american, so my vote for ari would carry no weight, but i am quite outraged at the stupidity of the politics behind this farce… ari would be a valuable person in any council indeed, and i do hope his appointment becomes confirmed soon.

Mr. Ne’eman’s appointment is opposed by many people because of his publicly stated positions:

1) Declaring that WE do not want to be cured, thereby purporting to speak on behalf of persons with Autism spectrum disorders. Mr. Nee’man has no right to claim to speak on behalf of my son who is severely autistic, with an actual Autistic Disorder diagnosis. He shares none of my son’s challenges. Many parents oppose him for his presumptuous and illegitmate claims.

2) He describes as morally reprehensible efforts by parents to cure their own children of autism disorders.

3) He is not particularly experienced or learned about autism disorders generally beyond his own very high functioning Aspergers Disorder.

4) He is seeking appointment to a disability council even though he does not view autism disorders as real disabilities.

I hope these disagreements with Ari Ne’eman’s actual public positions do not interfere with your hate mongering towards Autism Speaks or parents seeking to help their own children.

From what I understand of American politics the hold on his appointment is just temporary … unfortunately.

Zach, coem back! These Autism Speaks people are using your absense as an opportunity to promote the “cure”. Zach, we need you! Even if all you can do is go into activism or something, your daughter will be so proud of you, especially if she ends up with Asperger’s or something similar.
