Sara Childers is a young woman with Autism that has a huge passion for animals. Here is a video she conducted with CNN in 2008 which she makes some very great points.
She talks greatly about the misconceptions about Autism that many people believe that you have to be rain man in order to be autistic. She also talks about how Autism is not a disability in itself and the connection Autistic people have with animals.

I love this story…My son is so much like her…He knows every dog and cat where we live…he’ll walk around with a bird standing on a stick…he’ll walk around with a butterfly on his finger…everyone says “he talks” to the animals…some owners have told me that their dog will jump on everyone, but has never jumped on our son…they just lay next to him quietly…
