Autism Gene Isolated

Reuters is reporting today that a gene known as Contactin 4 may be the cause of many peoples Autism.  Dr. Eli Hatchwell of Stony Brook University Medical Center in New York recently led a study that found people with Autism have a higher rate of duplicate or deletions of DNA that disrupted Contactin 4.

Hatchwell tested 92 patients from 81 families and according to the article in the Vancouver Sun found 4 patients with a change in the DNA around Contactin 4.  According to the researching these changes were inheritied from fathers who had no previous history of Autism.

While 4 out of 92 patients is a small group – it is some legitimate science that shows that autistic people are born autistic – not changed into autistic people by immunizations or government conspiracies.

Legitimate? Pleeze! Four out of 92 displaying something that *might* be related to autism? That’s really stretching the meaning of legitimate.

What legitimate science means is its based of actual evidence – unlike hunch’s like the anti-vaccine camp.

I think that even if the anti-vaxers are right i wouldn’t want it getting out for 2 reasons 1: I think that it would be the death of vaccines which do have a legitimate purpose 2: it would mean that we ‘shouldn’t’ be who we are and thusly but much more credence in the curbies claims

This is stupid. They call it legitimate yet their results are weak. That’s as stupid as a wimpy 100-pound teenager saying that he can beat anyone at arm-wrestling after beating his baby brother. Do you know what I mean?

Commenting on the validity of this research based on the newspaper article is pointless. Virtually all news articles on science, especially advanced science, are worthless–you may as well base your understanding of history on comic books or movies. Google is your friend here, as it always is, and will lead you to the actual papers on the research topic. Those papers paint a very different, very compelling.
