This morning when I logged into AspieWeb’s twitter account (http://www.twitter.com/AspieWeb – you should follow us) an interesting trend showed up.  The term Assburgers is now a Top trend in the United States on twitter.com, and I decided to investigate why.  So now, lets look at why Assburgers has become a hot topic on Twitter.

A screenshot of Twitter.com trends

The term Assburgers which is often used as a derogatory term for Aspergers Syndrome and there was even an offensive video made featuring the term Assburgers.  After looking into the twitter use of Assburgers I discovered people are commonly misspelling Aspergers Syndrome as ‘Assburgers Syndrome’ on Google and it has now become a hot trend on Google, almost doubling overnight.

Many people believe that the reason Assburgers Syndrome has become a hot search on Google is because of a new show by the National Broadcasting Corporation called “Parenthood” which features a character that’s a child with Aspergers Syndrome.  The show premiered Tuesday night and the trend with Google started Wednesday morning which leads many people to believe that the reason leads to the New Show.

Are you offended by this?

I am very offended by this! When I gave a speech on Asperger’s at my school to raise awareness, for the next few weeks I had people asking me why a brain disorder would make me, well, have hamburgers for feces. Only in cruder terms.

But then, things tick me off quite easily. If it’s just a simple misspelling, then I really don’t mind it, but if it’s being used as an insult, as it is at my school, then I absolutely hate it. I’m going to reply to as many tweets as I can, just to correct their spelling.

I like to check the trends on google just because and was shocked to see this listed as high as it was and then found this blog.

Im shocked anyone could be silly enough to think it is spelled “assburgers.” It seems safe to assume that unless you have a very bad spelling problem, you are being cold-hearted.

Yep, and it reminds me of http://kobold.livejournal.com/667559.html

@Zach:

“I couldn’t agree with you more. How dare people who aren’t disabled make fun of people are. How would they like it if they’re made fun of? I’d get back at them if they taunt the disabled.”

@Alexa:

“You’re an inconsiderate bitch and so is the person who made that website you posted. How about I make fun of you and him or her if both of you have disabilities? Would you like that?!”

First of all I want to know what kind of intellect comes up with such a childish insult. I mean serisouly, is the level of intelligence so small that all they can come up with is Assburgers?! Really? I’m not insulted, how could I be by such stupidity! I almost feel sorry for such incompentants. How sad, to live such a life that all they can think to do is come up with insults online that requires the IQ of a 2 year old!

If this is the youth who are to be the future of this nation, we are all in very serious TROUBLE!!

Assburgers is a made up disease where people can act like assholes and blame it on their assburgers. They don’t have to learn social skills and get all insanity praised. Assburger childeren never have to grow up. Must be wonderful having a made up disease to be your free ticket to act assinine!

Don’t worry Drew. Thankfully people like this tend to be in the very small minority. I left my thoughts for this person, and now I shall leave them to thier ignorence. Let us not waste any time on such people. They are not worth it!

Actually sir, if you don’t have it, you aren’t going to get it. You have no idea what it is like to have an uncontrollable meltdown because you are in a bright yellow room. What it is like to not be able to read body language or understand how to socialize with those around you.

Personally I have something I call stone face. None of my emotions or what I am feeling shows in my face naturally. There is no expression, a blank slate as opposed to regular folks who can do so by instinct. I have had to learn how to act out externally what I am feeling internally, but it is always a mental effort.

I always have to think “I’m happy, ok so now I need to smile.” This does not occur automaticly. I have to litterally make that mental effort so that it will show externally what I am feeling internally.

I have no idea if anyone else with AS deals with that but I know that I do.

I deal with things every single day that you can’t even possibly imagine. I have to work hard all the time, dealing with a duel diagnoses of AS/PTSD and I won’t let someone like you who has never been in my shoes slander my efforts or take away from me how far I have come!

If you want to remain ignorant, I guess that is your choice. But think on this. One day you might have a child with this diagnoses. Maybe then, you realize it is indeed very real, and that those who deal with it do need REAL HELP!

I make no excuses for myself, and I am my own worst critic. I never use my AS for an excuse. But that doesn’t take away that it is a real struggle sometimes to deal with. I don’t appreciate those like you who spout off this nonsense without any sensitivity or compassion at all.

Drew’s right that you’re a jerk. Do you have some kind of childish mentality? If so, get the hell out of here and keep your worse-than-immature comments to yourself.

There’s “assburgers”
and there’s Asperger’s
Assburgers is the made up one
Asperger’s is the real mental retardation

How right you are. Whoever came up with the term “assburgers” needs major therapy.

Dominick, people with Asperger’s Syndrome have lower intelligence at the same rate as neurotypical people. I appreciate what you’re saying about the difference between ‘assburgers’ and Asperger’s, but do your homework so that your message can be taken more seriously.

whats your basis for saying that people on the Autism Spectrum have lower intelligence?

Oh thank you for clearing things up. My mothertongue isn’t englisch and I watched the new southpark episode. I just didn’t understand what’s this “assburgers” thing about. So I googled it and found the “aspergers syndrom” and this article. I’m happy that I understand it now, but I’m unhappy that misspelling a desease became so popular…

It’s probably ranking high at present due to a recent South Park episode. It can be offensive, if used in a derogatory manner, but I believe the way it was referenced in South Park was rather clever, and would be taken tongue-in-cheek by most of the South Park fans, particularly seeing as though it is Cartman who mistakenly misinterprets the condition as “assburgers”, who is not known for his political correctness or sensitivity.

If anything, it may actually help raise awareness of the condition, as people who’ve not heard about it before follow up and read further. Aside from children, who enjoy South Park for it’s rebellious, offensive nature, the majority of fans tend to be the geeky, intelligent types, so I don’t think that it will spread the wrong message amongst the latter demographic. It’s more the younger viewers you’d need to be concerned about.
