Aspies At War

The popular Autism Rights forum Aspies For Freedom has been locked down – no new users are allowed, and no new posts are being permitted.  Multiple long time users have been banned permanently as well.

Apparently some turmoil happened at that website, after allegations of peoples threads or posts disappearing for no reason.   The moderator EvilZakkie was apparently removed from moderator status for this, and several people including Rossco Lumbus (aka Grumpy Old Rossco) decided to spam the forum in protest encouraging people to boycott the forum.

First off, let me say I’m not entirely sad to see this happen to AFF – for a long time this website has been filled with Aspie Supremacists, individuals who think people with Aspergers are better then NT’s – which if you ask me is completely wrong.  Individuals who did not agree with this were considered trolls, and harassed on AFF and followed to other forums.

I’m not sure of the background behind AFF being ‘locked down’ but I have to ask myself – as aspies, are we are own worst enemy?

The answer to the question is Yes. Even more so than John Best. I was on AFF the whole time this was going on, indeed I was one of the “Evil Ten” denounced at the Stalinist Show Trail, along with Zakkie and Rossco. The true story is long and complicated and has been thrashed over on WP and the new replacement forum. There’s no winners in this sorry afair.

This is why I never even attempted to become a member.

I took a look over at their forums once, signed up for them, but left quickly because it felt very wrong to me. It was hard to discern what or why exactly I felt so uncomfortable there.

Oh yeah you can take it from an old fogey like me that this is inevitable.

It belies any notion of superiority or difference from NT politics.

And it is everywhere, but the glimmer of hope is that perhaps it is necessary in order to see who and what emerges as a challenge in the world of REalpolitik outside of the internet.

The internet, and our fora have been important and will remain so, but it is the wider alliances and lessons that a variety of movements can learn of each other that will drive us forward.

Essentially anything that relies on but a few individuals and is carried forward only by there enthusiasm is doomed. Even ANI the oldest of our “organisations” is doomed unless Jim Sinclair can abandon his own proprietorship over it.

Corporate structure and real democracy is the way forward.

AFF is but a forum, whereas Autism Speaks is a heck of a lot more. Think about it….
