Aspergers and Autism Gift Ideas

As Christmas quickly approaches so does the daunting task of finding the perfect gift for someone, and as you know people with Aspergers or other Autism Spectrum disorders can be somewhat distant, and even difficult to shop for.  So I wrote several suggestions here to help with the task of shopping.

  1. Weighted Blanket – I don’t have a weighted blanket, but I have a heavy jacket – some people with Autism swear by weighted jackets.  They are reported to have a calming and soothing effect on people, and I agree with these reports as my heavy jacket helps calm me.  Weighted blankets can varry in quality, and there are several companies out there that will even custom make your blankets with a fabric and design of your choice.
  2. Bookstore Gift Card – People with Aspergers and Autism often have a focal obsession, and often times large bookstores have books about these focal obsessions.  Bookstores often tend to offer a comfortable place to be able to distantly observe people interacting as well – which is also a good thing.
  3. Companionship – People with Aspergers tend to live solitary lives, but thats mostly because we are misunderstood.  It does not mean we don’t want companionship, infact I think as humans everyone desires it – so understanding companionship for the next year (although not a holiday gift) would be a great thing to give!

Great Post,

Thanks for the great insight. I especially liked #3, I have heard of extended family members giving a special day to autistic children. Essentially giving the gift of companionship.

I wanted to drop you a comment because I am trying to raise money for the Autism Action Partnership this Christmas, http://www.autismaction.com/events1.php. We are selling a Velvet Suit Santa Figurine and a sterling silver Four-Heart Pendant. They really are beautiful pieces and each sale benefits the Autism Action Partnership. I was thinking that you might know some moms who would be interested in these gifts/contributions. You can buy the gifts online at
