Aspergers, Autism and Fireworks

in Aspergers Living

Well with July 4th just passing I thought it would be a good time to talk about how fireworks effect those on the Autism Spectrum.  Fireworks usually don’t really effect me much, but I’m sure the stimuli from explosions, people cheering and the lights would cause some issues for people with Aspergers and Autism.  So…. please share your stories.

Happy Independence Day to All Americans!

I always enjoyed the colors and the loud booms, but I’m weird like that. I have had to adapt to loudness living in a large and loud family were you have to shout over people to be heard. That being said, I don’t however enjoy the white noise of thousands or hundreds of people talking, walking, laughing, screaming, footsteps, slurping, crunching and what have you that you find at a Fourth of July party or a major fireworks display.

I personally prefer the personal family gathering and lighting off of fireworks, all though if to many family members are present this can be stressful too. I guess I would say the people are more stressful for me to deal with than the fireworks, which I always find enjoyable.

i had a very difficult time with both fireworks an thunderstorms as a child with asperger’s, but as an adult now they don’t bother me as much.

hope everyone had a great holiday and didn’t blow off any appendages.

My son is 3 with PDDNOS, and has been cakked borderline aspergers, we found that rather than hazard a trip to the fair each year to watch, we park at a fast food place across the highway from where its held. The trees get in the way of the smaller ones, but its a safe distance for him (he doesnt like it when they are directly overhead) and we are alone. If the noise starts to bother him I give him his headphones, (I got a cheap pair of noise cancelling headphones for him when he started to have trouble with the noise and activity of crowded places.
