Advocacy Gone To Far

in Advocacy

There is a huge line that you have to cross to become ineffective at advocacy, and here is a prime example.  A person who has a great message, that vaccines do not cause autism created a video that is more like a porn video. (Its Safe For Work if Your Wondering).

In my eyes this seems just ridiculous, and no better then a porn actress talking about Autism Awareness in a porn video (And Jenny has yet to do that one).  This 24 second spot could of been much more effective if it stated some solid facts, instead of just a woman’s legs.

What are your thoughts on advocacy such as this?

This ad makes us look dumber than Jenny McCarthy, IMO. Remember the SuperBowl ad where the player put on pantyhose? (was it Joe Namath?) The ad was so shocking that ppl couldn’t remember what it was for – just the content.

So, this is ineffective, AND harmful to the vaccination cause. It makes the pro-vaccination movement look like it wants to sensationalize the message.

It’s called subliminal advertising. If you’re thinking about throwing one into her, it makes you more receptive to her deranged message (theoretically).

Good advertising need only do two things”
Remember the ad
Remember the advertiser (or in this case message)

Whether or not it was in good taste is irrelevent, it looks like it worked…it hit the target market…it worked on John, didn’t it?

I just keep thinking, “How in the world is lace and high heels ‘comfortable’?” They obviously have no idea what the word means.

I’m not sure whether this is the best way to go about what they’re trying to do, but I appreciate the message.
What you have to keep in mind is this seems satirical of precisely such people/things/ad-type things (sorry I can’t seem to find the right word here) as Jenny McCarthy. Not everyone is going to pick up on the fact that it’s satirical, though (I think it’s satirical? I got that impression from their website. Did you read the website?)

I think this is supposed to be satirical. However, they should have a disclaimer concerning that. I know from experience that a lot of ignorant people think that autistic people are perverts and likely to commit rape if not controlled. We do not need any reinforcement of that stereotype.
