A 50 year old being diagnosed with Autism is probobly not news to a lot of people in the Autism movement, but it does show that there are many people who have slipped through the diagnosis process who may need supports or even an explanation that can cause them to live much happier lives.
The very touching story of the life a 50 year old before and after being diagnosed with Autism can be found on WKYC TV’s website. I think all of us who are autistic can see similarities in his story and ours. One of the parts that hit me very hard was:
“My nickname at school was the retard” said Mazanec.
I don’t think people often realise how damaging that word is to people, I remeber my own family, and teachers using that word around me often. I remember how it made me feel, and how it almost destroyed me every time I heard it, and how it still upsets me today.

I also feel upset about the usage of the word “retard.” Even if it’s being used in a joke, it can still be extremely hurtful.
