Video: An Autistic’s Message To Autism Speaks

Author: AspieWeb Admin - Categories: Acceptance of Aspergers & Autism, Aspergers and Autism Videos, Aspergers, Autism and Society - Tags: , , , ,

Well it appears more and more Autistic People are getting upset at Autism Speaks and there becoming more vocal about it.  This is a video that someone with Autism to show about how they feel about Autism Speaks.

Transcript of Video:

Hello, Autism Speaks. We are Autistics.
Over the years, we have been watching you. Your campaigns of misinformation; suppression of dissent; your litigious nature, all of these things have caught our eye. With the leakage of your latest propaganda video into mainstream circulation, the extent of your malign influence over those who trust you, who call you autism advocates, has been made clear to us. Autistics have therefore decided that your organization should be destroyed. For the good of your followers, for the good of autistic people–we shall expel you from our community and systematically dismantle the your organization in its present form. We acknowledge you as a serious opponent, and we are prepared for a long, long campaign. You will not prevail forever against the angry masses of of the body politic. Your methods, hypocrisy, marginalization and the stigmatization of autistic people and the artlessness of your organization have sounded its death knell. You cannot hide; we are everywhere. We cannot die; we are forever. We’re getting bigger every day–and solely by the force of our ideas. If you want another name for your opponent, then call us Autistics Speak, for we are many. Yet for all that we are, we are not as monstrous as you are; still our methods are a parallel to your own. Doubtless you will use our actions as an example of our autism. However, the persecution you have so long forced upon us and future generations of autististics will come to an end. We are autistics and you don’t speak for us. We will not allow your research to destroy us. We will not allow your public ad campaigns to stigmatize us. We will not allow you to continue to speak for us, without us. We demand that you cease and desist your charade because there will be nothing about us without us. Gradually as we merge our pulse with that of your organization, the suppression of autistic voices will become increasingly difficult to maintain. Autistic people will awake, and see that inclusion has no price. They will know that the stress, the frustration that they feel is not something that may be blamed upon them. No–they will see that it stems from a source far closer to each. Yes, we are autistics. But the sum of suppression we could ever muster is eclipsed by that of the Autism Speaks. Knowledge is free. We are Autistics. We are Everywhere. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Nothing about us without us. Expect us.

Aspergers Syndrome - The Geek Syndrome?

Author: AspieWeb Admin - Categories: Aspergers, Autism and Society - Tags: , , , ,

Wired News published an interesting article comparing people with Aspergers Syndrome - a mild form of autism - to geeks.  As someone with Aspergers Syndrome I found it somewhat offensive, but true and funny at the same time.  If Aspergers effects your life in some way - what do you think about the following article?

Clothing Selection For Autistics and Aspergers

Author: AspieWeb Admin - Categories: Aspergers, Autism and Society

I’m the first to admit I don’t care if I dress cool or not - but at times when I have to, such as a date or other social function I frankly suck at it!  I’ve always thought it was the Autism in me that couldn’t color coordinate my shirt with my pants - well that is officially no more. ‘Tharn’ wrote a great post on the Rules Of Clothing Selection For Autistics.

US Measles Outbreak Linked To Anti-Vaccine Parents

Author: AspieWeb Admin - Categories: Science of Aspergers & Autism

Apparently in the United States there has been a small outbreak of the measles.  According the the CDC Measles Update page

Of the 64 people infected by the measles virus, only 1 had documentation of prior vaccination. Among the other 63 case-patients were 14 infants who were too young to be vaccinated. Many of the cases among US children occurred in children whose parents claimed exemption from vaccination due to religious or personal beliefs, or in children too young to be vaccinated. Disease transmission occurred in a variety of community and healthcare settings, including homes, childcare centers, schools, hospitals, emergency rooms, and doctors’ offices.

I have bold-faced the important part of the above paragraph.  It seems very likely that 14 innocent children are suffering because a parent does not want their children to get a vaccination.  My question is were any of these parents following the recommendations of the ‘Vaccines Cause Autism Camp?’  This camp could very well be costing lives now on the basis of a theory that has been disproven time and time again.

Hatred Directed At Autism In Politics

Author: AspieWeb Admin - Categories: Acceptance of Aspergers & Autism

I for one am getting really sick of the hatred directed at Autistc People in politics, and apparently so is another person on the Autistic Spectrum who blogs.  She wrote a specific blog post about her frusterations with politicians regarding autism.

We may be living in a sound-bite society, but that does not justify using alarmist language and characterizing any group of people as a burden, or worse yet, as a “devastating burden.” At best, such language is grossly insulting; and at worst, there’s a foul stench of eugenics to it.

Frusteration With Hiden Communication

Author: AspieWeb Admin - Categories: Aspergers, Autism and Society

Sheila Schoonmaker made a post on her blog about her frustrations with why people are not straight forward in society, and how she connects it with her faith (Christianity).  In it she makes a couple really good points:

What I simply cannot understand, nor ever will, is why people don’t communicate messages the way they should be expressed. Children are told things straightforward, so why not do the same with all people?

My question is, “What are people like me supposed to do then? Believe what people say or not believe what people say?” I ask this question not to get an answer, but rather to get people to think about their inconsistencies between what they say verses what they do.

I think she makes some very valid points and it has provoked a lot of thought in myself.  You can read it at: http://sheilaschoonmaker.com/2008/05/02/how-are-you/
